I am a stickler for quality and this bag does not dissapoint. The leather is buttery soft which is great because the bag just kind of slouches around your body with a nice ease. Stiff messenger bags look awkward and this looks so nice an natural when worn cross body. Tons of pockets and a padded computer area are a bonus. I will have this for years to come

great bag for schoolI bought this bag over a year ago and use it for the gym but mostly these days for school. my only complaint is the buckles aren't the highest quality so I get scared when I open and close the bag that they'll come off. the rest of the bag I simply love! I can carry a lot in this bag!

DisappointedI liked this bag a lot till I lost the buckles. The leather loosens up with time and the straps the buckles are attached too became so flexible that the buckles slipped off. I got smart with one of my other bags and tied the buckles on before use but I wish I could get a replacement set for this bag. Without the buckles I never use this bag any more. Shame because the leather is so nice.

I am a huge fan of Roots' leather products and as per usual this one does not disappoint. The leather is supple and the workmanship is impeccable...after all it is made in Canada. #I have several Roots products made with tribe leather and...let me just say this type of leather ages well#

Looks & Feels Exceptional, Very FunctionalThis is my first Roots leather purchase and I overall I am very impressed with the Modern Satchel in Aftrican colour Tribe leather. I ordered online, which can be risky as you can't see what you are getting. I wasn't certain that I liked the matching of the leather and grain of the leather at first -- a friend had purchased a similar bag from a store and the quality and matching of the leather was absolutely perfect on his bag -- however, as my Modern Satchel has worn in a little, and after I've added some leather protection, I've grown to really like the look of the leather. The leather is strong but supple, with nice heft but not too heavy.
The utility of the bag is great, too, with compartments and zippers in pretty much the most ideal places. There are only two things functionally that I believe could be improved: 1) move the buckle on the shoulder strap as it can get in the way with the strap pad (I am 5'8", and the same issue was noted by another at that height), and 2) make the exterior zippered pocket on the outside back longer with a deeper compartment. Re the latter, my previous worn out non-Roots leather bag had one and I used it all of the time. In this case I fit just the essentials, like bus pass, key card, lip balm, and some keys (a tight fit).
I can't think of any leather product I have had that has never required leather protection and it is the same with this bag. Roots online instructions for Tribe leather says that no protection is required. Tribe leather can be a little dry, in some places more than others, I don't believe that is true that no protection is required. It is lighter coloured and could likely stain with common products like coffee. It was difficult to find info out what products might work. I ended up using both a suede-type boot/coat spray and a leather lotion (Danier brand), and the latter worked the best. At first the leather darkened a little but after five + applications the Tribe leather bounced back to almost it's original state, just softer and with a slightly brighter sheen, with the browns highlighted a little more (compared to my friend's similar bag with no protection): see for yourself in the image below. I feel much better having some protection on this type of leather and would not hesitate recommending the use of a spray or leather lotion to anyone (but test it first!). I suspect the Roots products would also work and wearers of Tribe leather boots apparently use them.
Lastly, Roots service is hands-down the best. Within a couple weeks of purchasing this bag I lost the little leather key chain beaver fob that comes with this bag somewhere on my travels. I contacted Roots customer service and they sent out at no cost another Tribe leather "Buddy the Beaver" with a personalized hand-signed letter (preceded by a couple of nice emails). Don't leave it on the outside -- I will put this one inside the bag on a zipper. Thanks Roots!
Overall, I am very pleased with this product and Roots service; I've just purchased four more Roots Tribe leather pieces...

Not nearly as well made as I'd hopedThis bag left me wondering how much I have to pay to get a bag that lasts more than 2 years without things breaking or seams coming apart.
It looks very nice and the leather wears well even when out in the rain and getting mud splashed on the bag. The leather stitching is quite good too. But the nylon inside is the real problem. My 15" macbook pro fits fairly snug and after 2 years the stitching inside the bag is coming apart and there are small holes in the padded foam.
Also the metal snap that closes the bag has broken off. I'm not sure if it snagged on something while I was hanging the bag but I didn't notice it was gone until later. So now I have to send it away for 2-6 weeks and be charged for the repair since it is after 1 year. I was somehow under the impression the warranty was longer than 1 year. Silly me.
Also the bag is not nearly as comfortable on the shoulder as I would have liked. There is zero padding in the shoulder strap. Maybe I just have boney shoulders. I do use this bag a lot and cycle with it to work so this is something to keep in mind if you cycle a lot.
I actually found myself missing my nylon cheap Incase laptop bag for comfort and weight. It's just the nylon on such a bag does not wear nicely.

Glad I splurgedAfter much research I purchased this bag to accompany me on a trip to Europe. It needed to hold a days worth of goods for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens)...Kleenex, wet wipes, phone, DSLR camera, maps, passports, iPad...I could go on and on . This bag far exceeded my expectations and since returning from our trip I use it on a daily basis. I was initially concerned about it not having a zippered main compartment, however I just wore it with the flap against my body and didn't have any problems (we were in Rome and Pisa). And when I needed my husband or teenage boys to be in charge of the bag they were more than happy because it looks so good. It was a nice chunk of change, but I'd buy it again in a heartbeat!
