What types of leather does Roots use in its leather goods?

We craft our leather goods from several distinct leather types, each bringing its own character. Tribe is a full-grain Italian leather that develops a rich patina with age. Prince is our classic pebbled leather - softly textured and durable. Cervino Leather is refined and smooth. Cloud is a premium full-grain leather, naturally finished with aniline dyes and tumbled for a soft, pebbled texture - each piece shows natural variations that make it unique. Vegetable Tan is tanned using plant-based tannins from oak and mimosa bark or gallnuts - an Italian artisan tradition practiced for over 200 years that Roots has used since 1975. It develops a unique, attractive patina as it is exposed to air and sunlight, making each piece one of a kind. Woven Leather is our handcrafted basketweave signature. Every leather ages to a warm patina, and many of our pieces are crafted in our Toronto Leather Factory.

Are Roots leather goods made in Canada?

Yes. Roots has crafted leather goods in Toronto since 1973, and many of our pieces are still cut, stitched and finished at our own leather factory. Look for the 'Made in Canada' tag on individual product pages. Our Toronto heritage is central to who we are - even pieces we craft with international partners are designed in Toronto and made from carefully chosen leathers.

What leather goods does Roots carry?

We offer a comprehensive range: leather bags (backpacks, crossbody bags, handbags, totes, briefcase and messenger bags, weekender bags), wallets (card holders, bi-fold wallets, zip wallets), belts, small leather goods (pouches, wristlets), and accessories. Each is designed for work, travel or everyday essentials.

How do I care for my leather goods?

Wipe your leather with a soft, dry cloth to remove everyday dust and marks. For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth and air dry away from direct heat. Apply a quality leather conditioner every few months to keep it supple and age well. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct rain, salt and sunlight - if your piece gets wet, pat it dry and air out at room temperature.

Is the leather in Roots leather goods genuine?

Yes. We use genuine leather sourced from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group - a not-for-profit organization responsible for the world's leading environmental certification for the leather manufacturing industry. By purchasing this product, you are supporting responsible leather manufacturing. Our Greener Pastures™ leathers, part of LITE Sourcing, are traceable to the farm or ranch and follow the USDA Humane Handling program protocols - a commitment to traceability and sustainability from the source.

What colours are available in Roots leather goods?

Our leather goods collection features classic Black and Brown, with seasonal additions in Blue, Grey, Reds and Pinks, Purple and natural White and Neutral tones. Available colours vary by product type and season - check our category pages and individual product pages for current options.
