PRESIDENT BUSH & US OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC TEAMS WEAR ROOTS AT WHITE HOUSE CEREMONY
October 18, 2004

WASHINGTON - At a special ceremony at the White House today, President George W. Bush paid tribute to the 2004 American Olympians and Paralympians for their strong performance at the Games in Athens.

The 800 athletes all wore their official Roots US Olympic apparel at the event that took place under blue skies on the South Lawn. Organized by the United States Olympic Committee, the White House event has become a tradition after every Olympic Games since 1976.

During the ceremony, US Olympic Flag Bearer Dawn Staley and US Paralymic Flag Bearer Kevin Szott presented a Roots official US team jacket to President George W. Bush to make him an Honorary Member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. They also presented a Roots official US team jacket to the First Lady, Laura Bush, making her an Honorary member of the 2004 U.S. Paralympic Team. Mr. and Mrs. Bush then wore the jackets for the rest of the event.

The ceremony marked the closure of two months of Olympic sports celebration that began in mid-August in Athens with the Summer Games and continued with the recent Paralympic Games. Roots was an official Olympic outfitter of the US team at the Athens Games.

“Given their incredible sporting achievements in Athens, it was fitting to see the US Olympic and Paralympic athletes being honoured at the White House,” said Roots Co-Founder Michael Budman. “The fact that they were also all wearing Roots along with the President of the United States further added to the total Olympic experience for us at Roots and added to the pride we take in our excellent partnership with the United States Olympic Committee.”

In addition to the US team, Roots was the official Olympic outfitter of the Canadian, British and Barbados teams in Athens at the 2004 Games.
