TORONTO - As a sponsor of the City of Toronto's first annual Environmental Awards of Excellence, Roots Co-Founders Don Green and Michael Budman took part in a public ceremony last night at Toronto City Hall to honour the winners. The Awards, also known as The Green Toronto Awards, salute initiatives in eight categories contributing to the city’s environmental health and sustainability.
Toronto Mayor David Miller and Don Green on behalf of Roots, presented the Green Design Award to Alex Winch, owner of Beach Solar Laundromat. Located at 2240 Queen St. East, it is powered by solar energy created by eight solar thermal panels installed on the roof of the building while its unique air conditioning system is designed with no exhaust heat or use of refrigerants. Through environmentally friendly engineering, Beach Solar Laundromat has reduced emissions by 40 percent.
Green design is one of eight categories of the Toronto Green Awards. Through its financial contribution, Roots made the 2005 Green Design Award possible. It rewards the efforts of a company, project or group working with infrastructure, architecture or industrial design.
The involvement of Roots in the Toronto Green Awards reflects the long-time commitment of Roots Co-Founders Don Green and Michael Budman to environmental concerns.
