PARK CITY, UTAH
– Roots congratulates the director, producer and cast of Hustle and Flow, which achieved great acclaim at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival currently underway in Park City, Utah. In addition to winning accolades, Hustle and Flow is the object of the biggest deal ever closed at Sundance, the premier showcase for new independent films.

Paramount Pictures announced today that it had acquired Hustle and Flow as part of a $16 million package with Producer John Singleton who previously made the hugely successful Boyz in the Hood and 2Fast 2Furious. Paramount will release the film this summer in cooperation with its corporate partner MTV.

Roots takes great pleasure in Hustle and Flow’s success at Sundance. John Singleton is a friend of Roots, which designed and made a special line of merchandise for the actors in the movie and for the film’s launch party this weekend at the festival. The products include custom leather cast jackets that were made at the Roots leather goods factory in Toronto. A selection of Roots Hustle and Flow T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies is now on sale at the Roots store in Park City during the festival.

Rappers Ludacris
and Al Capone, DJ Qualls, actors Terence Howard, Taraji Henson and Anthony Anderson were among the cast members of Hustle and Flow who have visited the Roots store in recent days. Other actors attending the Sundance Festival, including Joe Pantoliano, made a point to drop into the Roots store this weekend.

Hustle and Flow tells the story of a Memphis pimp who, in the midst of a mid-life crisis, decides to pursue his dream of a career as a rapper. Made by Director Craig Brewer, the film is his first major feature.

“I have always admired John Singleton and his work,” said Roots Co-Founder Michael Budman, who earlier this month hosted a birthday party for John in Toronto where he is currently shooting his next film, Four Brothers. “He is a highly gifted, committed filmmaker who’s interested in developing and showcasing new cinematic talent. He understands what makes a story compelling and how to best make it work on the screen. I’m thrilled by the success he and his team have earned at Sundance with Hustle and Flow. They deserve it.”
