TORONTO -This week, two major shipments of clothes donated by Roots will leave by ship for Eastern Europe. They are part of a humanitarian operation in Romania and Armenia launched by World Vision Canada, an international relief and development organization.
In total, Roots contributed nearly half a million dollars worth of summer and winter clothing and hats for impoverished adults and children in Romania and Armenia. It represents 39 skids of merchandise of which 25 were first trucked to Quebec for departure by ship from the port of Montreal on June 3. The shipment is set to arrive in Romania on June 30.
The shipment to Armenia involves 14 skids. They were sent by truck from Toronto to Newark, New Jersey where they will leave by ship today for the former Soviet republic of Georgia. The shipment will arrive in the Georgian port of Poti from where it will be then dispatched by truck to Yerevan, Armenia for arrival in early July.
“We greatly appreciate the support of Roots,” says Stacia Vong-Hogeterp, of the Gifts-In-Kind-Department at World Vision Canada. “It’s a generous donation involving 22,600 units of clothing and caps that will be used as part of our development programs in Romania and Armenia. These gifts will bring much joy and hope to the people we serve there, especially children and families who live in dire poverty.”
Since 1957, World Vision Canada has been actively involved in international disaster relief response, long-term community development programs and advocacy initiatives focusing on poverty and injustice around the world. Currently, Canadians sponsor some 340,000 children through World Vision Canada.
“In moving to our new state-of-the-art warehouse in Toronto, we able to put together a shipment of first-rate Roots clothing from recent seasons that we wanted to give away to a worthy charity,” says Don Green, Roots Co-Founder. “We contacted World Vision Canada because of their excellent work in helping people in need. We hope these Roots products will prove useful gifts for the people that World Vision will be distributing them to in Romania and Armenia. It always feels good to help others.”
