| ROOTS FACTORY STAFF BREAK BREAD FOR HOLIDAYS AND WIN PRIZES
Roots Co-Founder Michael Budman, who hosted the event, paid tribute to the factory team for their dedication to Roots and their hard work in creating such high-quality products. In his speech, Michael had particular praise for a group of employees who have been working at the factory for the past 30 years. He cited by name Simon Bourgeois,Remo Fierro, Lok Wai Cheung, Filomena Jesus and Arlete Da Silva, all of whom have been working at the Roots production facilities since the mid-1970s . Accompanied by his daughter Alex and his son Matthew, Michael spoke of new plans for Roots in 2005. He described a renewed emphasis on genuine leather bags, jackets and accessories made in the Roots state-of-the-art factory. Among the new products is the Roots Emily Bag, a stunning tomato red leather bag that Michael previewed at the lunch. The Emily Bag is scheduled to be launched in mid-January. With special Christmas and New Year decorations providing a colourful backdrop, some 200 Roots team members sat down to a tasty hot buffet lunch prepared by the nearby Vagabond Italian restaurant. On the menu: Chicken parmegean, roast potatoes, risotto, steamed vegetables and chef salad followed by dessert featuring Gelato Fresco chocolate and strawberry ice cream, and fresh raspberry sorbet. Serving duties were handled by the factory management team, headed by Rosa Goncalves, Nadine Peca, Nina Rodiges, Guida Pitta and Dorothy Krol, with backup fromthe three Kowalewski brothers - Richard, Henry and Karl - who manage the factory and have worked with Roots Co-Founders Michael Budman and Don Green since Roots began 31 years ago. One of the highpoints of the lunch was the raffle of prizes, presented by the Kowalewskis. In total, 30 employees won special gifts for the holidays in the draw. All were name-brand electronics and appliances including colour TVs, DVD and VHS players. Among the lucky winners were Maria Silva and Ahn Thi Ngoc, who each won a 27" JVC television; Halina Cwik who won a Sony Dream System; and Bela Szabo, Rosa Faria and Maria Emilia Rodrigues, each of whom won a Hi-Fi Mini System. True to an annual Roots tradition, all employees also received a turkey to take home for the holidays. The workers will have an extended holiday from Friday, December 24 until January 3, 2005. They deserve it.
