![]() TORONTO – Roots Canada salutes Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist Adam van Koeverden on being named today the winner of the 2004 Lou Marsh Trophy. The award, voted on by a panel of leading sports editors and broadcasters, is given annually to the person chosen as Canada’s most outstanding athlete. Van Koeverden, 22, who this fall signed a multi-year deal to work with Roots, was Canada’s lone double medalist at last summer’s Athens Olympics where he won gold and bronze medals in kayaking. In receiving the award, van Koeverden joins an impressive list of past winners that includes Wayne Gretzky, Jaques Villeneuve, Mike Weir, Terry Fox, Larry Walker, Catriona Le May Doan, Bobby Orr, Kurt Browning, and other great Canadian sports heroes. “Winning the Lou Marsh Trophy is a fitting honour for Adam,” said Michael Budman, Co-Founder of Roots, who witnessed van Koeverden’s incredible feats in Athens last August and later kayaked with him in Ontario’s Algonquin Park. “We congratulate Adam on this just justly-deserved recognition. It’s a terrific climax to a year in which he’s already achieved so much.” In 2005, as part of his involvement with Roots, van Koeverden will be holding numerous kayaking workshops and sporting demonstrations with youth across the country. This reflects his desire to promote a healthy lifestyle and to be a positive role model for young Canadians. He and Roots are united in an initiative to celebrate Olympic ideals and to encourage youth to become more active in sports to fight the growing scourge of teenage obesity. -------------- For further information, contact: Robert Sarner, Director of Communication and Public Affairs 416-781-3574 ext 4280 E-mail: rsarner@roots.com |
